Southern Hamburger Steak with Onion and Mushroom Gravy

Ingredients
  

For the Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef 80/20 lean-to-fat ratio for best flavor.
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs Use fresh breadcrumbs for better texture.
  • 1 large egg Acts as a binder for the patties.
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • to taste salt and pepper

For the Gravy

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil For browning the patties.
  • 1 large onion, chopped Yellow onion preferred for sweetness.
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced Fresh cremini or button mushrooms.
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon flour Optional, for thickening gravy.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Mix until just combined and form into equal-sized patties.
  • In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat.

Cooking

  • Add patties to the skillet, cook for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned. Remove patties from skillet.
  • In the same skillet, add onion and mushrooms, sauté until soft and golden brown.
  • If using, add flour, stirring into onions and mushrooms. Gradually pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring until well combined.
  • Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  • Return the patties to the skillet, cover, and let simmer for about 10 minutes.

Serving

  • Serve the patties hot, generously covered with the gravy.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days; freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat on low heat with a splash of beef broth.
