Ingredients

Dough and Sausages

  • 1 tube 13.8 ounces pizza dough
  • 24 links cocktail-sized sausages

Pretzel Bath

  • 5 cups water
  • ¼ cup baking soda (55 g)

Egg Wash and Seasoning

  • 1 large egg (room temperature, beaten)
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Dipping Sauce

  • cheese sauce (for dipping)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 425°F and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Remove pizza dough from the package and place it onto a cutting board. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out into a rectangle with a ¼-inch thickness.
  • Using a pizza cutter, cut the rolled-out dough in half lengthwise. Then, cut each rectangle of dough into 12, 1-inch strips, totaling 24 strips.
  • Place one sausage onto each strip of dough and roll tightly until wrapped.

Boiling and Baking

  • In a medium saucepan over medium heat, bring water to a light boil, then add baking soda and stir until dissolved.
  • Boil the pretzel dogs in batches of 3-4 for 20-30 seconds, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on the baking sheet.
  • Brush each with the beaten egg and sprinkle with salt.
  • Bake for 15-18 minutes until golden brown.

Serving

  • Serve warm with cheese sauce for dipping.

Notes

Make sure to roll the dough tightly around the sausages to ensure they stay wrapped during cooking. Don’t skip the boiling step with baking soda; it’s what gives them that classic pretzel flavor and color. Feel free to experiment with different dipping sauces, like mustard or ranch dressing.
