Caramel Apple Puppy Chow
A delightful fall treat that combines crunchy Chex cereal with a gooey caramel coating, apple flavors, and a hint of cinnamon, perfect for gatherings and cozy nights.
Ingredients
Cereal Base
- 9 cups Chex cereal (rice or corn) You can use any similar textured puffed cereal.
Caramel Mixture
- 1 cup caramel bits or 14 oz soft caramels, unwrapped Either works well for this recipe.
- 0.5 cup unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp milk Adjust if needed for consistency.
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Coating
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 0.5 cup crushed freeze-dried apple (optional) Can omit if not using.
- 0.5 tsp ground cinnamon (optional) Add for an extra flavor boost.
- 0.25 cup chopped pecans (optional)
- Extra apple chunks, dried or fresh, as a garnish (optional)
Instructions
Preparation
- Add 9 cups of Chex cereal to a large mixing bowl and set aside.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 1 cup caramel bits, 0.5 cup unsalted butter, and 2 tbsp milk. Microwave for 1 minute, then stir. Continue microwaving in 30-second bursts until the mixture is smooth.
- Stir in 1 tsp vanilla extract into the warm caramel mixture.
- Pour the caramel mixture over the bowl of Chex cereal. Gently stir to coat the cereal evenly.
- In a large zip-top bag, combine 2 cups powdered sugar and 0.5 cup crushed freeze-dried apple (if using cinnamon, add it here).
- Transfer the caramel-coated cereal into the bag. Seal the bag and shake vigorously until the cereal is evenly coated.
- Spread the mixture out on parchment paper and allow it to cool. Once set, break it into bite-sized pieces.
Notes
Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For longer storage, freeze it in bags for up to 3 months. Remember to thaw at room temperature before serving.
