Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 12 oz mozzarella string cheese, cut into halves
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs Feel free to swap in gluten-free bread crumbs if needed.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

Preparation

  • Place the mozzarella stick halves in the freezer for at least 1 hour to help maintain their shape.
  • Set up three shallow dishes: one with flour, one with beaten eggs, and the last for a mix of panko breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper.
  • Coat each mozzarella stick in flour, followed by a dip in the beaten eggs, and finally a press into the panko mixture to ensure each stick is well-covered.
  • Lay the coated mozzarella sticks in a single layer on a plate or baking sheet.
  • Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (190°C) and lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.

Cooking

  • Arrange the mozzarella sticks in the basket, ensuring they do not touch. You may need to work in batches.
  • Air fry for 6 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the sticks are golden brown and crispy.
  • Serve immediately with your favorite marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

For extra crunch, consider double-breading the mozzarella sticks by dipping them in the egg mixture twice before coating them in panko. You can use different types of cheese or add herbs to the breadcrumb mixture for variety. Leftover mozzarella sticks can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
